As Birthmark, Nate Kinsella (American Football, Joan of Arc, Make Believe) creates lush, layered pop that makes inventive use of organic and electronic instrumentation. Today, we’re premiering How You Look When You’re Falling Down, Birthmark’s latest full-length, which is due out this Friday on Polyvinyl.
Head below to stream the entire record now. Additionally, Kinsella was able to shed some light on his writing and recording process this time around. Connecting with us through email, he shared the following thoughts:
“A lot of what I’ve created in the past is very cerebral, and my process has been to labor over songs for years-recording, editing, and re-recording multiple versions of everything. This time around I decided to loosen up and try to strike more of a balance between thoughtful arrangements and unencumbered performances. I discovered when I was writing the vocals that I was fictionalizing characters to sing each song. It happened naturally but still came as a surprise when I realized what was happening. It really freed up where the songs could come from. I still spent a lot of time thinking about the songs and writing parts for all the different musicians who played on the album, but I think by embracing the joy of creating in a more spontaneous and less self-conscious and critical way, I was able to create music that feels and sounds more electric and alive.”
