Oakland-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Boy Scouts (aka Taylor Vick) has shared the video for their new track “Hate Ya 2,” off of her forthcoming album Free Company, due out August 30 via ANTI-, and we are pleased to premiere it. The video features cut-out illustrations arranged in a montage that depicts a heart’s brutalized journey as it is plundered for its riches. With diaphonous piano fluorishes and a steady pulsing rhythm of electronic drums and melancholic R&B bass, the track blooms like a plant requiring little light. On the making of the track, Vick had this to say in a statement to Under the Radar: “‘Hate Ya 2’ is about trying to grapple with conflicting feelings. When you still have love for someone who can also make you feel undervalued and hurt, and how confusing that experience can be.The process of recording this song felt very cathartic. Often, instead of tracking to a metronome, Stephen [Steinbrink] would come up with a programmed beat on his computer and I’d record to that instead of a click. We ended up really liking how the electronic drums sounded with this song and decided to keep them. Stephen and I drove out to my parent’s house with my friend Rose Droll to have her record piano on a few songs from the record, and when she played along to this one we tracked a few takes of her improvising. It added such a beautiful melancholic element, in true Rose Droll fashion.”

Recorded in a studio set up in a rented shipping container that her friend Stephen Steinbrink constructed, Free Company finds Vick opening up their recording process to include friends and collaborators for the first time. Check out our My Firsts interview with Vick here.
