Nov 13, 2013 Le Guess Who? 2013 By Laura Studarus

Later this month, Under the Radar will head over to The Netherlands to check out Le Guess Who? Festival. In honor of our trek, we asked a few of our favorite musicians performing at the festival to introduce us to a few of their favorite musicians via our ongoing mixtape project.

Emily Wells did not disappoint. The genre-blurring violinist delivered a mix reminiscent of her most recent album Mama—full of melodic ballads and spiky hip-hop in equal parts.

“The first piece on this mixtape is part of a larger project I’m working on that falls somewhere between remix, mash-up and sound art,” says Wells of her picks. “Here are some questions: What is the body? What is desire? What is love? What is need? This one What is Lust? is the first in the series pulling lyrics out of their original context in order to answer said question. I also want to demonstrate obsession. Song lyrics get inside us and turn and turn like we are trying to wring something out. Maybe by placing all of these desires together here, the wringing can be complete. I’ve included the source tracks to complete the mix. Enjoy, and listen to this with someone you wanna touch.”
