New York-born and Los Angeles-based indie singer/songwriter Jackson Lundy crafts spacious genre blends, taking refuge from heartache and hardship in the breezy shade of indie pop, soul, and R&B. He first drew attention with his 2017 single “Calypso,” and he has shared a steady string of new singles in the years since, returning most recently with his 2022 debut EP, Stella My Dear. Tomorrow, Lundy is set to share his forthcoming debut album, PEACHY KEEN. The record acts as an encapsulation of his nostalgic, sun-dappled style, pulling together a variety of influences from the warm and welcoming sides of pop, R&B, and soul and coloring them with unexpected aesthetic turns.
Lundy explains of the record, “PEACHY KEEN is really just the greatest hits of the past 7 years. I wanted to showcase the kinds of music I grew up on as a way of saying thank you to all my heroes. There are some influences on this record that you really just don’t hear anymore so it’s exciting to bring it back into people’s ears. There’s some old ragtime, some bossa, neo soul, a little country and a bunch of Pixar.”
Ahead of the record, Lundy is back today with an early listen to one of the album’s unreleased highlights, “Work Friends,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“Work Friends” makes full use of the roomy interiors of Lundy’s style, letting his vocals ring out above a bed of slight acoustic tones, simmering strings, and steady drumbeats. He sways and croons, joined by swooning gospel harmonies and plinking keys as his lyrics pine after an unrequited love. Lundy floats effortlessly over the instrumentation, lost in a dreamy haze of infatuation and heartache. It’s a bleary twist on neo soul and folk, marrying a lovelorn confessional with an idyllic exterior.
Lundy explains of the track, “‘Work Friends’ is a song I wrote about longing and the helplessness of liking someone that just doesn’t like you back. It feels like you’d be okay doing anything for them including washing dishes for eternity. For the video, we set out to recreate different versions of the yearning dynamic but in different vignettes. We had a lifeguard watching his crush run down the beach, a pool boy so down bad he falls into the pool, and a paperboy who can’t win over his neighbor.”
Check out the song and video below. The full PEACHY KEEN album is out on December 6th via Nettwerk.
