Premiere: Jeff Russo & Lisa Hannigan cover “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” for Lucy in the Sky
Full soundtrack releases digitally on October 4th from Lakeshore Records
We’re excited to share this reimagined cover of a Beatles classic by Jeff Russo, the Emmy-winning composer of TV’s Fargo and UTR’s favorite game of 2017, What Remains of Edith Finch. He’s joined on vocals by Lisa Hannigan, the Irish singer-songwriter who rose to fame as a solo artist and former Damien Rice bandmate. Here, the song is transformed into an atmospheric, orchestral slow burn, a drastically different but compelling new take on the much more upbeat, Lennon-McCartney original.
The song was appropriately covered for the film Lucy in the Sky, directed by Russo’s Legion collaborator Noah Hawley. The film stars Natalie Portman as the titular Lucy, an astronaut who returns home from space to find the experience has altered her sense of reality. The film also features Jon Hamm, Dan Stevens, and Ellen Burstyn.
“The score for Lucy in the Sky has been some of the most fulfilling and challenging work I’ve done,” says Russo. “From utilizing custom-made instruments to writing emotionally charged melodies for this character study, I had to dive deep to find the tone for Lucy.”
Lucy in the Sky—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack arrives digitally from Lakeshore Records on October 4th, the same day the film hits theaters courtesy of Fox Searchlight. You can watch the trailer below:
