Nashville-based indie rock outfit mercury has been on the rise over the past few years, sharing a steady string of new singles since her 2022 debut, “I Don’t Know You Like I Used To.” Most recently, Maddie Kerr—the singer/songwriter behind the project—has been pairing with producer Alex Farrar (Wednesday, MJ Lenderman, Waxahatchee) for a series of new releases, including her three-track EP, Together We Are One, You And I, which arrived earlier this summer.

She also has been sharing another trio of new singles this fall, beginning with “Swarm The Hive Mind” and “What You Want Me To Say.” Today, she’s releasing the third and final single in the trilogy, “The Fly,” premiering with Under the Radar.

“The Fly” is a moody, textural counterpoint to Kerr’s preceding singles. Where “Swarm The Hive Mind” was a blast of grungey garage rock and “What You Want Me To Say” steadily builds to a spectacular swirl of vocal harmonies and layered acoustics, “The Fly” stays mired in shadowy tones and minor key melodies. The ethereal qualities of Kerr’s vocals come to the forefront as they twist and turn into knots above a blur of driving percussion and post rock guitars. This moody mix steadily grows more chaotic until Kerr’s vocals are almost completely absorbed into a maze of distortion later in the track, only to emerge on the other side for an equally unsettling denouement. Kerr sings, “Fighting for my life / Down on the bathroom floor / Fighting back my love / I didn’t know what for.”

“It’s abstractly about a lot of things,” says Kerr of the track. “Winning, making mistakes, losing, obsessive love, overthinking love, and being hurt by it.”
