There’s no other band quite like Danish trio Mew. They have a unique sound (a mix of art rock, dream pop, and prog rock, led by singer Jonas Bjerre’s unmistakable high-pitched voice) and a visual aesthetic all their own. The band’s new video, for “In a Better Place,” is very much in Mew’s weird and wonderful universe. The song is taken from Visuals, which the band released last month via Play It Again Sam, and Bjerre directed the video himself. He says the video “tells the tale of the magic mountain creature and his followers, performing their ritual dance, in the ever-changing world of the pink planet.” That sounds about right. We are honored to premiere it. Get lost in Mew’s magical land below.
Bjerre delved further into the video in an exclusive quote for Under the Radar: “I made this video almost like a stream of consciousness project. I played the song on repeat and drew things, and wrote things down, without thinking too much about it. I didn’t want the subject matter translated too directly into the visual side. I did some dancing (of my own dubious choreography) and made some creatures out of Play-Doh, the soft kind, then put it all together. It sort of has a storyline, but not a really obvious one. But it has to do with inner worlds.”
Visuals is the follow-up to 2015’s + -. It’s also Mew’s first album since the departure in 2015 of founding member and guitarist Bo Madsen (as well as Bjerre two other founding members, bassist Johan Wohlert and drummer Silas Utke Graae Jørgensen, remain). Previously the band shared the album’s closing track, “Carry Me to Safety,” along with videos for “85 Videos” and the jazzy “Twist Quest.”
