Premiere: Moon Duo Mixtape (Beaches Brew Edition)
Festival Happens June 1-5 in Marina Di Ravenna, Italy
May 15, 2015
Beaches Brew
On June 1-5, Marina Di Ravenna, Italy will host the fourth edition of Beaches Brew—a free festival featuring the Thee Oh Sees, Viet Cong, Shabazz Palaces, and more. Along with the sunscreen, we’re packing a series of mixtapes from artists playing the fest, you know—just to get us in a sunny frame of mind. The next in the series comes from Moon Duo.
“I know this is supposed to be a summer mix but I’m sitting in my basement, and it’s dark,” says Moon Duo’s Ripley Johnson of his picks. “But I have the heat turned up, so let’s imagine that it’s a summer night, late night, mix. I avoided anything related to the beach, surf guitars, or lotion.”
Listen below. You can also revisit our previous mixes in the series from DJ Fitz and Afterpartees. If you’re headed to Italy, you can grab all the event details here.

Tracklist:
1. Antonym: Cinnamon Air - I discovered this from the excellent Minimal Wave Tapes compilation series. I know nothing about the band.
2. Daniele Baldelli/The Units: The Right Man - This is from Baldelli’s classic comp/mix Cosmic. The Units were one of the first synth punk bands, from San Francisco. I prefer the cough syrup ambience of this cosmic disco mix.
3. Vangelis: Let It Happen - This is from Vangelis’ solo album Earth. I don’t know much about Vangelis. I have this album, and 666 by Aphrodite’s Child. They’re both really good. I can’t stand that ‘Chariots of Fire’ song that he did later.
4. Logic System: Clash (Chinjyu of the Sun) - This is from an early 80’s Japanese band, an album called Logic. That’s about all I know.
5. The Field: This Is Power - From the album Looping State of Mind. I like how this song sounds like it’s levitating.
6. Cave: Machines and Muscle - Cave are from Chicago and they’re the best. This is from one of my favorite albums by anyone, Psychic Psummer. It’s all killer.
7. Love: Orange Skies - I usually hate Baroque pop, but for some reason I like Love. This is from the album Da Capo, side 2 of which has the lamest side-length jam in the history of LPs. Side 1 is really good though.
8. Tinariwen: Tahult In - Still my favorite Tuareg band.
9. Sensations Fix: Fragments of Light - I discovered Sensations Fix fairly recently and I don’t know why they’re not more well known. Maybe they’re huge in Italy.
10. Doug Hream Blunt: Gentle Persuasion - Private press jams from San Francisco. There’s some great live footage of him on Vimeo. Check it out. He’s going to be bigger than Gary Wilson.
