Indie label Illegal Art got its start as a purveyor of heady, guerrilla-style, sample-based music from 1998 to 2012. After putting the label on hiatus in 2012, founder Matthew S announced a new slate of releases this year, beginning with Tongues, his own new EP under the moniker Myth Math. During Illegal Art’s initial run, Matthew led it under a series of synonyms. Tongues represents his most personally identifiable work, and his most accessible. Amidst the samples and knotty electronic aesthetic turns, the tracks find him pulling together influences from a more traditional set of singer/songwriters, song structures, and live instrumentation.

“Maybe I grew disenchanted with hiding behind so many aliases,” Matthew says. “I became attracted to the idea of saying I’m just a person, with no illusion of a larger project.”

The Tongues EP is due out later this week, and Myth Math has already shared a pair of new singles from the record, “Deep Down” and “Lift.” Today, he is sharing a final single from the record, “Infinity,” premiering with Under the Radar.

“Infinity” begins as a spacious dream pop odyssey, but takes several restless turns as it winds on. It initially feels like a transmission beamed out to the infinite expanse of space, taking on an otherworldly color with the effects-laden vocals and watery synth melodies. After ascending skyward atop grand synth swells, the track suddenly diverts into sparse, robotic electronica before filling out with careening live drums and entrancing oscillating synth tones. A raging tide of rhythms rushes the track towards an ecstatic climax, only for it to sprawl out once more into its initial spacey ambience as it winds downwards.

Lyrically, the track sorts through love, loss, and infinite unknowns, but roots its abstract turns in the simple enduring strength of familial connection: Her body’s cold / She left you with a poem / On the fire / You’re doing alright / Infinity / Closed eyes and moonbeams / Live to die / We’re doing alright.”

Matthew says of the track, “‘Infinity’ begins with a moment of hearing my son’s voice on the phone, and despite the usual parental worries, I realize how profoundly his life is filled with goodness. It touches on topics of familial love, our journey away from a multi-generational religion, and tragic death. The accompanying video is homemade, with video captures of our home and family photos, and it includes a labyrinth, moon art, and video games made by family members.”
