Next week, London-based singer/songwriter Sophie Jamieson is set to share her new album, I still want to share, arriving January 17th via Bella Union. After a handful of EP releases, Jamieson released her debut album Choosing in 2022. In the time since, Jamieson has paired with producer Guy Massey for her follow-up, co-producing the album and layering in rich new instrumental touches. On I still want to share, Jamieson and Massey create a vibrant and textured backdrop for her introspective songwriting, letting autumnal folk arrangements blend together with moody swirls of strings, simmering synths, and shuffling percussion.

Last year Jamieson previewed the album with a trio of singles, “I don’t know what to save,” “Camera,” and “How do you want to be loved?” Today, she is back with her latest effort, “Vista,” premiering with Under the Radar.

“Vista” is a slow-burning nocturnal ballad, burnished by delicate finger-picked guitar work and misty vocal harmonies. The instrumentation subtly ebbs and flows, carefully shifting the track’s tone as Jamieson builds upon a bed of spectral guitar lines. At one moment the vocals and guitar may settle momentarily into silence as twinkling keys dance in the track’s margins, only for orchestral tones to seep in from the shadows and fill the quiet with entrancing swells of instrumentation. All along, Jamieson’s voice simmers at a low murmur, carrying moody tension and moonlit beauty in equal measure.

Lyrically, the track traces imagery of a drive up to a beautiful mountain vista with a lover. As the lyrics unfurl, the dangerous and self-destructive element of the trip steadily comes to the forefront: “I’m swinging corners, taking on the road at double speed / Get a grip love, there’s shit I wanna live to see.” Jamieson explains of the track, “Written in the midst of falling in love, I think I sensed the danger in my own emotions. It was intense and rapid, and though I didn’t realise it at the time, this song seems to reveal my awareness of losing myself very quickly. I felt like a child, in good and bad ways. Everything felt electrified, but also lonely. I found myself painting this picture of a long car drive along cliffs under empty skies, constantly ruining everything, always asking for too much.”
