The Veils are releasing a new album, Total Depravity, this Friday via Nettwerk. The album was co-produced by El-P (aka Jaime Meline) of hip-hop duo Run the Jewels, along with Atom Greenspan (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) and Veils frontman Finn Andrews. The band had previously shared the album’s first single, “Axolotl,” along with its striking video. Now we’re pleased to share the exclusive premiere stream of the full album. Listen below, followed by the band’s upcoming tour dates and the “Axolotl” video again.
Total Depravity was recorded over a two-year span at Estúdios Sá da Bandeira in Portugal, Konk Studios in London, Casa Lynch in Los Angeles, and El-P’s studio in Upstate New York. “It could’ve been a disaster, getting someone from a completely different genre and background and trying to mush it together,” Andrews recently told Kyle Mullin of Under the Radar about working with El-P. “Jaime introduced all these synthetic sounds that had never been part of our palette. It really charged us up.” El-P got involved simply because The Veils is one of his favorite bands.
The album is the band’s fifth, the follow-up to 2013’s Time Stays, We Go, and the band’s first for their new label, Nettwerk. The son of Barry Andrews, co-founder of legendary British post-punkers XTC, Finn Andrews was born in London (where he is currently based), but spent his teenage years in New Zealand, where The Veils project started when he was only 16. David Lynch is a fan of the band and Andrews will thusly also be appearing in Showtime’s new Twin Peaks series airing next year.
Preorder Total Depravity here and check out the band’s back catalogue on Spotify.
Read our recent 2015 Artist Survey interview with Andrews and look out for a new interview with The Veils in Under the Radar‘s next print issue.
