R.E.M. Against FOX News’ Use of “Losing My Religion”
“Our music does not belong there.”

R.E.M.
Though R.E.M. is officially retired, that doesn’t mean Michael Stipe and co. won’t notice when their music is shanghaied without their permission, particularly when the culprits are FOX News. During the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday the network used “Losing My Religion” to soundtrack their coverage. A post on the band’s website reads: “Today, through its music publisher, Warner-Tamerlane Music, demanded that Fox News cease and desist from continuing its unlicensed and unauthorized use of the song. We have little or no respect for their puff adder brand of reportage. Our music does not belong there.”
For years R.E.M. have been well-known supporters of more liberal-minded politics, having toured in support of Democratic candidate John Kerry in 2004. Stipe himself discussed his advocate social and political causes with Under the Radar back in 2008, and recently contributed to Dave Eggers’ 90 Days, 90 Reasons campaign support of President Barack Obama’s re-election.
