R.E.M. have just wrapped up the recording of their 15th studio album, tentatively set for a Spring 2011 release date. The band commenced recording in Portland in Fall of 2009, followed by a session early this year in New Orleans, culminating with a recently completed summer stint in Berlin. Production duties were assumed by Jacknife Lee (U2, Snow Patrol), who also manned the boards for 2008’s Accelerate. All that’s left to do now is mix, which will take place this fall, according to the band’s official website. Band manager Bertis Downs adds on the site, “To my ears it all sounds like quite a wonderful set of songs,” perhaps a purposefully vague statement since Michael Stipe took so much flak in 2004 for suggesting Around the Sun would be “Primitive and howling.” Potential tracks for the record include Accelerate outtakes “Staring Down the Barrel of the Middle Distance” and “On the Fly,” both appearing in nascent form on last year’s Live at the Olympia double album.
