In a recent interview with Spin, R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills revealed some interesting details about the band’s 15th LP, Collapse Into Now, due out in early 2011 on Warner Bros Records. Patti Smith, Eddie Vedder, Peaches, and Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Band) will guest, and the record is said by Mills to be “more expansive” in contrast to the nearly uniform straight ahead collection of rockers featured on 2008’s Accelerate, although it does feature a handful of up-tempo tunes, and is a “very personal, very human record,” differing in tone from Accelerate‘s frequent political diatribes. Production duties were again helmed by Accelerate producer Jacknife Lee (U2, Snow Patrol), and track titles include “Walk it Back,” featuring Vedder, closing track “Blue,” featuring Smith, and a yet to be named number with Peaches and Kaye guesting that will feature “Alligator” in the title, according to Mills. Nice to know that Michael Stipe still has alligators on his mind, as he dreamt of them on “Hope” way back on 1998’s Up.
