Richard Ashcroft Shares First New Song in Seven Years – “Lover”
The Former Verve Frontman is Opening for Oasis on Their UK Reunion Shows This Summer
May 22, 2025
Richard Ashcroft, formerly of The Verve, has released “Lover,” his first new song in seven years, shared via a music video. He will be opening for Oasis during their massive reunion shows in the UK this summer. Check out the song below, followed by the tour dates.
Ashcroft’s last solo album of original material, Natural Rebel, came out in 2018. In 2021 he released Acoustic Hymns Vol. 1, but that album features stripped down versions of some of his previous songs.
Ashcroft wrote “Lover” and co-produced it with Emre Ramazanoglu. It incorporates elements of Joan Armatrading’s song “Love and Affection,” one of Ashcroft’s favorites. He got Armatrading’s blessing before recording the song.
Acoustic Hymns Vol. 1 included a seven-minute acoustic version of his most iconic song, “Bittersweet Symphony.” In 2019, Ashcroft got the publishing rights to “Bittersweet Symphony” back from The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, making the new version of the song all the more triumphant.
