Ride’s Mark Gardener Talks Collaborative Record with Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie
“We have a mutual respect for each other.”

Mark Gardener (formerly of Ride) and Robin Guthrie (formerly of Cocteau Twins) will be releasing a full-length collaborative album, likely later in 2013.
“I did a tour with Robin in the U.K. in February, and that was on the back of us releasing a single together last year called ‘The Places We Go,’ which was an online release,” Gardener says. “In April I went over to France to visit Robin, and he has a studio over there. We thought we’d write some more songs. It was happening quite quickly and effortlessly, and we realized that if I stayed on for another couple of weeks we could essentially have an album. So, I did.”
Gardener was working on lead vocals for the album when he spoke to Under the Radar from his Ox-4-Sound studio in Oxford, England in July.
“Robin’s able to make beautiful sounds with everything that he touches,” he says. “He has this great sound about him and what he does. I think, obviously, what he didn’t have around him for a while was a vocalist. It’s been interesting to him, and to myself, to work together. We have a mutual respect for each other.”
Gardener admits to being a fan of Guthrie’s work as far back as his time in Ride.
“The Cocteau Twins, people like that, and Dead Can Dance, some of the 4AD music at the time—that was stuff we were all inspired by,” he says. “We all passed it around and would listen to it, even though it didn’t really sound like Ride at all. Certainly The Cocteau Twins was something we all loved. I’m now doing a record with Robin Guthrie, so it’s all come full circle.”
The record’s title and release date have yet to be announced. Listen to “The Places We Go” below. Look for an article on Ride’s classic 1990-released debut album, Nowhere, in the next print issue of Under the Radar.

I heard ‘The Places We Go,’ was a great tune. Hope he gets out more songs for 2014. Gardener truly has a talent that most people aren’t aware of.
