St. Vincent to Direct New Female-Led Film Adaptation of “The Picture of Dorian Gray”

A New Version of Oscar Wilde's 1890 Novel

St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) directed one segment (“The Birthday Party”) of the horror film anthology XX. It featured four different horror tales, each directed by a different woman, and released back in February. Now she has been tapped to direct her first feature film. It will be a new adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s 1890 novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, but with a twist: the title character will now be female, rather than male. In the Victorian set original, a man’s self-portrait painting ages while he stays young. Variety reports that Lionsgate is making the film and David Birke is writing the script (he penned Paul Verhoeven’s Elle, starring Isabelle Huppert). No further details, such as casting or a release date, have been announced yet.

There have been many film and TV adaptations of The Picture of Dorian Gray over the years, ranging from 1910 to the present day. Dorian Gray was also a character in 2003’s comic book adaptation The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and on Showtime’s recent acclaimed TV show Penny Dreadful.

St. Vincent recently shared a brand new song, “New York.” It was our Song of the Week. “New York” is likely the first taste of her fourth album, the follow-up to 2014’s self-titled one, which she has been working on with Bleachers’ Jack Antonoff. Her new album has yet to be announced, but she recently announced a fall tour she’s dubbing the “Fear the Future Tour” and also shared a funny announcement video for the tour. Check out all the dates below again. “New York” is below again as well.
