Steve Gunn Shares New Song About His Late Father - “Stonehurst Cowboy”

(Plus Acoustic Video) The Unseen In Between Due Out January 18, 2019 via Matador

Dec 06, 2018 Steve Gunn

Steve Gunn is releasing a new album, The Unseen In Between, on January 18, 2019 via Matador. Previously he shared its first single, “New Moon” (which was our #1 Song of the Week). Now he has shared another song from the album, “Stonehurst Cowboy,” which is inspired by his father. He’s also shared a live acoustic video for the song filmed in London. Check out the audio and video below, followed by his upcoming tour dates.

The Unseen In Between is the follow-up to 2016’s Eyes on the Lines, which was his debut for Matador. Two weeks after the release of Eyes on the Lines, Gunn’s father died after a two-year battle with cancer. His passing influenced the new album, in particular “Stonehurst Cowboy.” A previous press release said the song “distills the lessons Gunn learned from his father and it is a solemn but tender remembrance, a tribute to his father’s reputation as a tough, wise, and witty guy from far west Philadelphia.”

Gunn had this to say about the song in a press release: “‘Stonehurst Cowboy’ is a tribute to my late father, who passed away in 2016. Stonehurst is an area in Southwest Philadelphia where both my parents grew up. Heavily affected by the Vietnam War, he became an adult at hyperspeed after high school when he was drafted—though he didn’t end up actually fighting in Vietnam. He was too young to know what the hell was going on when the war broke, and it wasn’t until he, his brothers, and friends came back to make any sense of it.”

James Elkington produced The Unseen In Between, which was engineered by Daniel Schlett.
