Sufjan Stevens has announced a new five-volume album, Convocations, which will be out in full on May 7 via Asthmatic Kitty. Stevens will be releasing Meditations, the first album volume, this Thursday (Apr. 8), and has shared a song from it titled “Meditation V.” A new volume will be released every week leading up to the full album’s release date. Listen to “Meditation V” and check out the cover art for Convocations below.
Stevens wrote and recorded Convocations in the fall of 2020 shortly after his biological father’s passing, with each album in the set—Meditations, Lamentations, Revelations, Celebrations, and Incantations—representing the five stages of grief. An accompanying longform generative video art piece was created for the album by artist Melissa Fuentes, which will be released alongside each volume on YouTube. Convocations will receive a 5-LP vinyl boxset release on August 20.
Stevens’ most recent album, The Ascension, was released last year on Asthmatic Kitty to critical acclaim, and made it to #13 on our Top 100 Albums of 2020 list.
