As the BBC reports, Mercury Prize-nominated act The Horrors have been tapped by Damon Albarn for a collaboration on the upcoming Gorillaz album.
Albarn sent the band a fairly vague message inviting the band down to his studio and, on their visit, informed the band that he and second Gorillaz member Jamie Hewlett were interested in working with a “guitar band” on an upcoming track for the album due out next year. Bassist Rhys Webb explains, “It was kind of a strange email saying, ‘Would you guys be able to come down to my studio at some point?’” He added, “We went down to the studio and he said, ‘We’re working on the new album and we’ve not collaborated with a guitar band before and you’re album is one of the most exciting things I’ve heard in a long time. Would you be up for working on a track?’”
The Horrors agreed, citing Albarn’s Blur as an influence for their own music. “That was the first band I went to see,” he said. “For a lot of us, they’ve been a really important group. They’ve always been diverse and experimental and I think as a band moving forwards, that’s very much they way we approach music.” That set in stone, Albarn also re-mixed a Horrors track, “Whole New Way,” which is slated to be released a single.
