The Lemon Twigs (aka brothers Brian and Michael D’Addario) are releasing their sophomore album, a concept musical entitled Go to School, on August 23 via 4AD. Previously they shared its the string- and piano-backed closing track, “If You Give Enough” (which was one of our Songs of the Week), as well as “Small Victories” (which was an honorable mention on our Songs of the Week list). Now they have shared another song from the album, “The Fire.” Listen below, followed by the band’s upcoming tour dates.

Michael had this to say about the song in a press release: “With any musical, you’ve gotta first believe that people breaking into song every five minutes is normal-there are no rules. You’ve gotta believe it in order to enjoy the music and absorb the weight of the lyrics. The ‘why’ is just because it gets you to the next part. It’s supposed to make you feel something. Go to School is not meant to be taken literally outside of the context of the art. It’s what they call a ‘movie for your ears,’ and this scene is called ‘The Fire.’”

The Lemon Twigs released their debut album, Do Hollywood, in 2016 on 4AD. Last month the band shared a teaser video for something called Go to School, which was at the time simply described as “a musical by The Lemon Twigs.”

The Lemon Twigs recorded the album in their Long Island house. It features Jody Stephens (Big Star) and their father Ronnie D’Addario. A previous press release said Go to School “tells the heartbreaking coming of age story of Shane, a pure of heart chimpanzee raised as a human boy as he comes to terms with the obstacles of life. Todd Rundgren and their real life mother Susan Hall play Shane’s parents.”

The band had this to say about the album in the previous press release: “Something now, then, big, small, bleak, and hopeful. All in under an hour.”

Last year The Lemon Twigs followed up Do Hollywood with the Brothers of Destruction EP and back in March they shared two new songs, “Foolin’ Around” and “Tailor Made,” neither of which is featured on the album.
