The Magnetic Fields Announce New Album
Return to Merge for Love at the Bottom of the Sea
Dec 13, 2011 The Magnetic Fields
The Magnetic Fields have announced that they will be releasing their tenth full-length album Love at the Bottom of the Sea on March 6. The new record is to be the band’s first release of new material with Merge since 1999’s 69 Love Songs. The album is also something of a return to form in terms of sound, as the band is back to the signature mix of synthesized and acoustic instrumentation that was noticeably absent from their last three albums. In a press release frontman Stephin Merritt says that “instead of using a synthesizer as a melodic instrument, much of the time I used it as a compositional destructive mechanism, something eating away at the apparent order of my perfectionist arrangements. I was very happy to be using synthesizers in ways that I had not done before. Most of the synthesizers on the record didn’t exist when we were last using synthesizers.” Recorded in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York, the album’s full tracklisting can be seen below. Starting next year the band will begin a North American tour that will include a stop at the SXSW Music Showcase in Austin, TX. Their full itinerary is also below.
