The New Pornographers’ new album, Together, hit stores today and to promote its release the Canadian collective have released a new video for single “Your Hands (Together).” The video was directed by the band’s own Blaine Thurier, who already has experience directing independent feature films. The clip has no plot, but features a bunch of folks doing choreographed karate in time with the music (the band makes no appearance). Vancouver’s Hybrid Movement group appear, dressed as ninjas. “It’s 100 percent real,” Thurier revealed to Spinner, who premiered the video today. “There’s no camera trickery. They are doing Capoeira. It’s this Brazilian mix of martial arts and dance. It was developed by slaves and because they had their hands shackled, they could only kick and use their legs.”
“Carl [Newman] just thought that the guitar riff had that karate punch-kick feel,” Thurier also told Spinner, explaining the impetus behind the video. The band has a ton of tour dates this summer. This Thursday they play Newman’s current hometown of Woodstock, NY, and later this month they head to Europe, followed by a bunch of U.S. dates with support from The Dodos. Visit the band’s website for a full list of dates and check out the video below.
