Under the Radar caught up with Twin Shadow frontman George Lewis Jr. earlier this year to discuss the act’s as-of-then unfinished album, Confess. The record was recently confirmed for a July 10 release by 4AD, and the album’s first single “Five Seconds” has been made available for download. The full, in-depth cover story with Lewis appears in our Winter Issue, which is still on newsstands.

During our chat, Lewis revealed of Confess, “I think I’ve trimmed the fat down. I’d like to think that every single song is equally as important, single-worthy, but I also felt that way about Forget, too.”

Lewis recorded the bulk of Confess in L.A. with keyboardist Wynne Bennett, yet the town’s sunny environs didn’t lighten up the act’s sound in the least. “It’s funny, the record is actually more aggressive. You’d think that I’d go out to California and make this really mellow record, but it’s not, it’s more aggressive.”

Lewis’ longstanding passion of motorcycling provided a needed element of relaxation suring the songwriter’s high-pressure, taxing schedule while working in L.A., allowing him to decompress during the making of he album. “A lot of my time when I wasn’t recording was spent riding my vintage ‘72 Bonneville,” he says. “That was totally different for me. I had a motorcycle before, but it was in the city, where you can’t open up and have a real drive. So I had the Hollywood, L.A. experience on my motorcycle having fun. But it was mostly a time to relax after all the touring we’d done.”

Other quotes from Lewis culled from the article:

“If anyone out there can get Bob Dylan to listen to my record, make it happen”

“A lot of it [Confess] has to do with when you sacrifice your life a little bit to something you love to do.”

Bonus quote from Lewis, that doesn’t appear in the article:

“I love this song!,” Lewis exclaims vociferously as The Stone Roses’ “Waterfall” blares from the photo studio’s stereo. “What a great record!”

The Winter Issue, also features stories on Dirty Projectors and Grizzly Bear discussing their upcoming 2012 albums, and Lewis is pictured on the cover with the act’s respective frontmen, Dave Longstreth and Ed Droste.
