Kim Deal of The Breeders (and formerly of Pixies) has shared a new song, “Coast.” It’s her first solo single for 4AD (also the label for The Breeders), although it’s not her debut solo song. Listen below.

The late Steve Albini recorded “Coast” at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. The song features Kim’s sister (and Breeders bandmate), Kelley Deal on guitar. Lindsay Glover and Breeders alum Mando Lopez make up the song’s rhythm section. Chicago marching band Mucca Pazza provide the horns.

Kim Deal wrote the song in 2020 after being at a friends wedding. The wedding band, The Grape Whizzers, performed Jimmy Buffett’s 1977 classic “Margaritaville” with “revelatory levels of low self-esteem,” as Deal puts it in a press release. The song was also inspired by a 2020 trip Deal took to the Massachusetts island of Nantucket, even though she says, “I hate the sun, beach and watersports.” The press release says she “spent a rough off-season where young workers ‘check the WAM’ for surfing conditions.”

Last year The Breeders put out a 30th anniversary edition of Lasy Splash.
