U2 to Perform “The Joshua Tree” in Its Entirety on 30th Anniversary Tour, Including at Bonnaroo

Mumford & Sons, OneRepublic, The Lumineers, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds to Support

Jan 09, 2017 U2

U2 are one of those rare classic bands from the ‘80s that have maintained the same complete original lineup and have never broken up and reformed. You can argue about which album is their best, and when they last released a truly great album, but for the first question many would make a case for 1987’s The Joshua Tree. Now the band has announced a 30th anniversary tour in which they will perform the classic album in its entity for the first time. It includes a headlining performance at Bonnaroo. Mumford & Sons, OneRepublic, and The Lumineers will be the support acts in North America, and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will be the opener in Europe. Below are the tour dates, followed by is a trailer for the tour and three videos from the album.

U2 guitarist The Edge had this to say about the tour in a press release: “It seems like we have come full circle from when The Joshua Tree songs were originally written, with global upheaval, extreme right wing politics and some fundamental human rights at risk. To celebrate the album - as the songs seem so relevant and prescient of these times too - we decided to do these shows, it feels right for now. We’re looking forward to it.”

U2 frontman Bono issued this statement: “Recently I listened back to The Joshua Tree for the first time in nearly 30 years… it’s quite an opera. A lot of emotions which feel strangely current, love, loss, broken dreams, seeking oblivion, polarization… all the greats… I’ve sung some of these songs a lot… but never all of them. I’m up for it, if our audience is as excited as we are… it’s gonna be a great night.”
