“Taro,” featured on alt-J‘s Mercury Prize-winning debut An Awesome Wave, takes its inspiration from war photographers Robert Capa and his companion and partner Gerda Taro, the latter of which tragically died as the two covered the front lines of the Spanish Civil War. Mentored by director David O. Russell, director Melissa Murray of The Ghetto Film School has debuted a music video capturing a narrative of her own spiritual Capa and Taro documenting the ongoing violence of modern Chicago.
“When I heard alt-J’s ‘Taro,’ Chicago was the first location I thought to capture the energy in the song,” says Murray. “I wanted to put a spotlight on the violence that is going on there and have real faces to go along with those statistics. Having Capa and Taro’s story shown through the eyes of two young Chicagoan kids will hopefully hit home to those who have no idea what’s going on there.”
