Angel Olsen is releasing a new album, MY WOMAN, on September 2 via Jagjaguwar. Previously she had shared videos for the album’s first two singles, “Intern” and “Shut Up Kiss Me.” Now she has shared another song from the album, the eight-minute long “Sister,” via its video. Olsen self-directed the album’s first two videos, but this time she co-directed with Conor Hagen. It features the singer/songwriter/guitarist wandering around Los Angeles and the California desert of Joshua Tree. Watch it below, followed by her upcoming tour dates.
Olsen had this to say about the video in a press release: “I wanted to keep from cutting these shots up too much. I wanted to slow frames down just enough for the cinematography to make its own statement. My aim was to gather a mixture of very different themed material, and somehow take a look at the synchronicity that material naturally brought forward.”
Hagen added: “‘Sister’ addresses conflict within and then moves beyond it. The song is lyrically contradictory, so we wanted to show those opposing dualities. The contrast between a wide shot and a close-up, the duality between the city and that natural world, joy and melancholy.”
MY WOMAN is the follow-up to 2014’s excellent Burn Your Fire For No Witness.
Justin Raisen (Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira, Santigold) produced the album, which was recorded live to tape at Los Angeles’ Vox Studios. For the sessions, guest guitarist Seth Kauffman joined Olsen’s regular band of bass player Emily Elhaj, drummer Joshua Jaeger, and guitarist Stewart Bronaugh. As the title suggests, Olsen says that while the album isn’t a full on feminist statement, MY WOMAN does deal with “the complicated mess of being a woman.”
