Austra are releasing a new album, Future Politics, on January 20, 2017 via Domino. Previously the band shared a video for its first single, “Utopia.” Now the album’s title track has been shared via its video. Allie Avital directed the “Future Politics” video, which features frontwoman Katie Stelmanis singing the song while dancers move across an urban landscape. The band has also announced some new tour dates. Watch the video below, followed by the dates.
Stelmanis and Avital issued a joint statement on the video: “‘Future Politics’ is the breaking down of paradigms. In this video, we wanted to explore what a world might look like if our values were transformed: instead of glorifying labor, maybe we could learn to glorify the act of doing absolutely nothing.”
Future Politics is Austra’s third album is partly inspired by Stelmanis’ time living in Montreal and Mexico City. A press release says the album “calls for radical hope: ‘a commitment to replace the approaching dystopia.’” The press release also cites “European club culture” as an inspiration, specifically “Objekt, Peter Van Hoesen, Lena Willikens, and ‘90s legends like Massive Attack; in all, artists who understand the dancefloor as a source of radical ideas and radical joy.”
