Scottish electro-pop trio CHVRCHES recently shared a brand new song, “Death Stranding,” taken from the soundtrack of the PlayStation4 game of the same name. Last night they stopped by The Late Late Show with James Corden to perform the song. Watch the performance below.
The soundtrack, DEATH STRANDING: Timefall (Original Music from the World of DEATH STRANDING), came out yesterday via RCA. Hideo Kojima created the game.
CHVRCHES had this to say about the project in a previous press release: “We were really excited about the opportunity to work with Kojima because we have been fans of his work for a long time. He has always been such a visionary in the gaming world and we were honored to be involved in the project. The concept of Death Stranding is so unique and really felt to us like it was challenging people to care about the world they create—in the game and otherwise. We wrote this song specifically for Death Stranding, thinking of the themes of the game and what it is trying to say to people.”
The press release describes the concept of the game this way: “From legendary game creator Hideo Kojima comes an all-new, genre-defying experience for PlayStation®4 system. Sam Bridges must brave a world transformed by the Death Stranding. Carrying the remnants of our future in his hands, he embarks on a mission to reunite the shattered world. With spectral creatures plaguing the landscape, and humanity on the verge of a mass extinction, it’s up to Sam to journey across the ravaged continent and save mankind from impending annihilation. What is the mystery of the Death Stranding? What will Sam discover on the road ahead? An unprecedented gameplay experience holds these answers and more. Starring Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, and Lindsay Wagner.”
CHVRCHES released a new album, Love Is Dead, in May 2018 via Glassnote. Its track “Graves” is the intro song for the latest season of the Japanese Netflix reality show Terrace House: Tokyo 2019-2020 and just yesterday the band shared a video of them performing the song in the living room of the Terrace House.
In November 2018 CHVRCHES released the five-song Hansa Session EP that was recorded in Berlin’s Hansa Studios, the same studio where David Bowie recorded his iconic Berlin trilogy with Brian Eno in the 1970s (Low, “Heroes”, Lodger).
In March the band teamed up with Marshmello, the 26-year-old dance producer from Philadelphia who wears a smiley marshmallow mask when he performs, for the new song “Here With Me.” They then all performed the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, when the show was broadcasting from Las Vegas for a week.
CHVRCHES were on the cover of one of our print issues in 2015 and you can read the in-depth 8-page 5,600-word cover story feature on the band here. You can also read our bonus digital magazine Q&A with them here.
