Watch: Destroyer - “Times Square” Video
Poison Season Out Tomorrow via Merge
Aug 27, 2015 Destroyer
Destroyer (aka Dan Bejar) is releasing his new album, Poison Season, tomorrow (August 28) on Merge in the U.S. (and via Dead Oceans in Europe). Previously we had heard Poison Season tracks “Dream Lover,” “Girl in a Sling” (via its video), and “Times Square.” And last week the whole album was streaming. Now there’s a video for “Times Square.” It’s part weird stop-motion clip and part close ups of Bejar singing the song. And of course the actual Times Square briefly shows up at one point, but Bejar gets extra points for not taking the easy way out and filming the whole video in Times Square.
In fact, the initial idea was to shoot at the New York landmark. “We ended up just wandering around New York ‘til 3 AM and the city seemed completely dead. We could have been anywhere, really,” says director Shayne Ehman in a press release. And so Ehman took inspiration from the song’s lyrics instead. “I needed to get outside and shoot in natural light in order to serve as a sort of conduit for those ‘forces of nature in love…’ which seem to rule the song,” Ehman says. “I let the sun do its thing and let the earth do it’s thing and watched time unfold. I watched the clouds unfold and unpack and packup. I was at their mercy, completely.”
