On Friday we reported (via Billboard) that Eagles of Death Metal would be joining U2 in Paris at one of their two shows, either last night or tonight. Then yesterday U2 said Eagles of Death Metal were not performing with them and last night indeed they didn’t (Patti Smith was the guest instead). But tonight’s show was another story, Eagles of Death Metal did indeed appear at U2’s show at the AccorHotels Arena. Josh Homme, who doesn’t usually tour with Eagles of Death Metal, but who Billboard’s source had said would take part in the U2 show, wasn’t involved.
The two bands performed a cover of Patti Smith’s “People Have the Power” and then Eagles of Death Metal did their own song, “I Love You All the Time” (which the band have been asking other artists to cover for charity). Before “I Love You All the Time” Bono said, “They were robbed of their stage three weeks ago. We’d like to offer them ours tonight.” The concert is being broadcast on HBO tonight as U2: Innocence + Experience Live in Paris, but in the meantime it can be watched at Periscope and the Eagles of Death Metal moments were captured in the fan videos below.
Eagles of Death Metal were playing the Le Bataclan venue on November 13 in Paris when ISIS terrorists stormed it, shot into the crowd, and took hostages, in what instantly became a tragic international news story. U2 were supposed to perform at the AccorHotels Arena the day after the attacks, but the show was postponed for security concerns. Bono and the rest of the band offered support to Eagles of Death Metal following the attacks, including offering them the use of their plane.
