The National’s frontman Matt Berninger has teamed up with former Menomena member Brent Knopf (who also records as Ramona Falls) for the new project EL VY. The duo will be releasing their debut album as EL VY, Return to the Moon, on October 30 via 4AD and previously shared the lyric video for the album opener and sort of title track, “Return to the Moon (Political Song for Didi Bloome to Sing, With Crescendo).” Now the band has shared a new song, “I’m the Man to Be,” via its lyric video.
The catchy song features the curious chorus: “I’m peaceful cause my dick’s in sunlight, held up by kites. I’m the man to be.” Tom Berninger (Matt’s brother) directed the video and filmed it in Los Angeles. It features Matt and Brent at the Santa Monica Pier amusement park and Matt singing the song on Venice Beach, as if he’s talking on a cell phone.
Matt Berninger talked about the origin of the song in a press release: “There’s this great Schoolboy Q song ‘There He Go’ which samples Menomena’s ‘Wet and Rusting.’ I thought it would be funny to re-sample the same sample and do it from the perspective of a pathetic self-aggrandizing rocker alone in a hotel room. Something I know a lot about. That’s how it started but then Brent took the sample out and we wrote an entirely new song.”
Check out the “I’m the Man to Be” below, followed by their upcoming tour dates.
