Flock of Dimes
Wye Oak frontwoman Jenn Wasner is releasing her debut full-length album under her Flock of Dimes solo project, If You See Me, Say Yes, which is due out September 23 via Partisan. She had already shared the album’s first single, “Semaphore,” and now the song has a video. Michael Patrick O’Leary and Ashley North Compton directed the clip, which seems to use some stop-motion techniques with Wasner (similar to some parts of Peter Gabriel’s iconic “Sledgehammer” video). Watch it below via NPR, who premiered it.
The directors had this to say about the video in a press release: “We wanted to present the tension of reaching out and not being able to touch. Fleeting communication with an outside world, felt but not seen, and Jenn’s interaction with her own double, create a hallucinatory sense of limbo. It creates a solitary confinement, wherein no matter how partnered or joined we find ourselves, those selves, our own best and worst companions, are all we have.”
Wasner wrote, performed, and self-produced the album. Mickey Freeland in Baltimore and Aaron Roche in NYC also helped with the recording process. John Congleton (St. Vincent, Angel Olsen) mixed If You See Me, Say Yes in Dallas. Wye Oak recently surprise-released the excellent Tween, a new mini-album on Merge.
