Future Islands are releasing a new album, The Far Field, on April 7 via 4AD. Previously the band shared its first single “Ran.” Last night the Baltimore-based trio stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform “Ran.” While we have been longtime supporters of the band, there’s no question that their fortunes changed and their profile increased thanks to an amazing March 2014 performance of “Seasons (Waiting For You)” on The Late Show with David Letterman that went viral. The band can never really compete with that one-off moment that just clicked with the Internet, but on Fallon frontman Samuel T. Herring was as magnetic as ever, with his unpredictable stage movements leaving the audience on edge and his emotive vocals being fully affecting. Watch the performance below, followed by the band’s upcoming tour dates.
The Far Field is the follow-up to the Baltimore-based trio’s acclaimed 2014-released breakthrough album Singles. Samuel T. Herring (vocals, lyrics), William Cashion (bass, guitars), and Gerrit Welmers (keyboards, programming) wrote the album in North Carolina and Baltimore. John Congleton produced the album at the Sunset Sound studios in Los Angeles. Blondie’s Debbie Harry guests on the album, singing a duet with Herring, “Shadows.” Patrick McMinn contributed string arrangements and this is the first Future Islands record to feature live drums by Michael Lowry. The album will be released “digitally, on 180gm white and standard black LP, CD, cassette formats, and as a unique, first-of-its-kind miniature LP.”
