Watch Highlights of “SNL” Finale: Courtney Barnett, Fred Armisen, and The Lonely Island
Plus Carrie Brownstein, Paul Simon, and That Dead Poets Society Sketch
May 23, 2016 Andy Samberg
Saturday night saw the season finale to Saturday Night Live. Former cast member Fred Armisen was the guest host and Australian singer/songwriter/guitarist Courtney Barnett was the musical guest. Below are some highlights of the episode.
Firstly there’s Barnett performing two songs from her debut full-length album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, which is out now via Mom + Pop and landed at #6 on Under the Radar‘s Top 100 Albums of 2015 list. Barnett did “Nobody Really Cares If You Don’t Go to the Party” and “Pedestrian At Best.” (Read our recent joint interview between Barnett and Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy.)
Then comedy trio The Lonely Island (former SNL cast member Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone) did an SNL Digital Short with Samberg in character as Connor4Real (who he plays in the new film Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping). The amusing song, “Finest Girl,” was about a girl who wanted to be fucked like the U.S. military fucked Osama Bin Laden and the video also featured Armisen and other cast members.
Then there was a silly sketch that featured Armisen, Samberg, Armisen’s Portlandia co-star Carrie Brownstein, Larry David, and former cast members Maya Rudolph and Jason Sudeikis, among others, in which they were all in a ‘70s Southern rock band playing a contemporary urban community center.
Then there was the cold open sketch that featured Kate McKinnon as Hilary Clinton and Larry David as Bernie Sanders.
Finally, there was a funny sketch that starred Armisen and made fun of the whole “captain, my captain” scene in Dead Poets Society. And there was a web-exclusive sketch featuring Armisen and Paul Simon. Watch all the videos below. Also below are some Instagram photos from the after party (via Stereogum), which featured a supergroup of Barnett, Armisen, Brownstein, and Shamir.
