Julianna Barwick released a new album, Will, last Friday via Dead Oceans. Now she has shared a video for “Same,” a song that features vocals from Mas Ysa. Zia Anger directed the haunting clip, which features three different seemingly unconnected characters.

Anger commented on the video in a press release: “It goes without saying, Julianna’s music is cinematic in nature. We’ve worked together now three times (two music videos, and one short film) and each time we do, our process becomes more playful, more intuitive, more exciting. By the time we shot the final scene the entire idea had morphed in to some sort of spirit. The cast and crew were laughing so hard we were crying, it was totally hysterical, one of the purest cinematic moments I have ever experienced both in front of and behind the camera.”

Previously Barwick had shared a video for Will track “Nebula.” Barwick recorded the album all over the place: a house in upstate New York, the Moog Factory in Asheville, North Carolina, and Lisbon, Portugal. Will includes contributions from Thomas Arsenault (Mas Ysa), Dutch cellist Maarten Vos, and percussionist Jamie Ingalls (Chairlift, Tanlines, Beverly). “While making this record, there were moments of isolation and dark currents,” Barwick says in a press release. “I like exploring that, and I love when I come across songs that sound scary or ominous. I’ve always been curious about what goes into making a song that way.”
