Julien Baker and TORRES (aka MacKenzie Scott), two beloved queer indie rock singer/songwriters, performed their new country song, “Sugar in the Tank,” together on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night. The song hasn’t been officially released yet. The super-duo has shown up on some 2025 festival bills, performed together in New York City last night, and a country album from them has previously been rumored to be in the works. For now, watch their Fallon performance below, but stay tuned for more news from Baker and Scott (which is actually a good name for a classic country duo).
TORRES released a new album, What an enormous room, in January via Merge. In August she teamed up with Fruit Bats for the collaborative EP, A Decoration, also on Merge.

Baker’s last solo album was 2021’s Little Oblivions, which was followed by the accompanying B-Sides EP, both released via Matador.
Little Oblivions was one of our Top 100 Albums of 2021. Read our Protest Issue interview with Baker, where she discusses the album, here. Also listen to our Under the Radar podcast interview with Baker here.
In 2023, boygenius—Baker’s supergroup with Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers—released their debut full-length album, the record, on Interscope. It was followed by the EP, The Rest.
