Tonight’s BBC music show Later… with Jools Holland featured several memorable music performances. Jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington performed “Fists of Fury.” Christine and the Queens (aka Héloïse Letissier) performed her current single “Girlfriend,” complete with choreography and backing dancers. St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) did “Fast Slow Disco,” her recently released new version of her song “Slow Disco.” Beloved British veterans James performed two songs, recent song “Better Than That” and 1990s classic “Sit Down.” Daniel Blumberg, the former Yuck frontman who recently released his new album, Minus, on Mute, also performed “The Bomb.” On the show various musicians take turns in the round, performing in a TV studio in front of a live audience. Watch all the performances below.
Washington is releasing a double album, Heaven and Earth, on June 22 via Young Turks. Previously he shared its first two singles, “Fists of Fury” (a cover of the theme to the Bruce Lee film) and “The Space Travelers Lullaby” (they were our joint #1 Song of the Week). Then he shared another song from the album, “Street Fighter Mas,” which was also one of our Songs of the Week.
St. Vincent released her latest album, MASSEDUCTION, last October via Loma Vista. It was one of our Top 100 Albums of 2017. “Fast Slow Disco” is a new version of the album’s “Slow Disco.” The original version was a delicate string backed track. Clark has now remixed the song to make it more ready for the actual disco, speeding up the tempo and adding in electronic beats. The new version was one of our Songs of the Week.
Christine and the Queens recently shared a new song, “Girlfriend” (which features Dâm-Funk), as well as a French version of the song, titled “Damn, dis-moi.” It was one of our Songs of the Week. There was also a “Girlfriend” video featuring Letissier and others dancing on a skyscraper under construction. Christine and the Queens made waves in their native France with their 2014 debut album, Chaleur humaine. A more English language version of the album, simply titled Christine and the Queens, was released in America (and other English speaking countries) in 2015 via Because Music. “Girlfriend” is the first new song since that album.
James released a new EP, Better Than That, last month, and are releasing a new album, Living in Extraordinary Times, on August 3. “Better Than That” is featured on both. They also recently shared the new song “HANK.”
