On his debut album World, You Need A Change of Mind, artist Adam Bainbridge (a.k.a. Kindness) built his standout single “That’s Alright” around samples from a song called “Still Smokin’” by Trouble Funk, a go-go band that has existed as part of the Washington D.C. music scene since 1978. When Bainbridge boldly approached the band with a request to perform the new version of the song together Funk Trouble weclomed the UK songwriter with open arms, resulting in a unique music video for the track.
During his meet-up with Trouble Funk, Bainbridge and visual artist Pauline Beaudemont filmed and assembled their own documentary short capturing the experience. Titled “Still Smokin’” the film is meant to to provide “a brief, outsider’s view into go-go and the D.C. scene, its importance as a genre and its influence on contemporary music culture.
