Margot Robbie is returning as DC Comics villain/anti-hero Harley Quinn (a character she played in 2016’s Suicide Squad) in next year’s Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and now the first trailer has been shared. The movie features Harley teaming up with two other female heroes, Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Black Canary (Jurnee Smollet-Bell), as well as with Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) and Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco), as the face up against the villainous Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) was written by Christina Hodson, directed by Cathy Yan, and is due out February 7, 2020 via Warner Bros. Watch the trailer below.
Robbie will also be returning as Harley Quinn in the sequel to Suicide Squad, entitled The Suicide Squad. It’s due out August 6, 2021 and is being directed by James Gunn (of the two Guardians of the Galaxy movies). Absent from both movies seems to be Jared Leto, who played Harley’s ex-boyfriend The Joker in Suicide Squad. Of course, this weekend there’s another Joker coming to theaters, with Joaquin Phoenix playing the title character in Joker, which is a standalone movie not connected to the continuity of the main DC Extended Universe movies. It’s probably likely that the Birds of Prey trailer will screen prior to Joker.
