Former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night to cover the late David Bowie‘s “The Man Who Sold the World.” Stipe is taking part in this week’s two New York City tribute concerts to Bowie. Watch video of his performance below, which just features a very bearded Stipe and a pianist.

The Music of David Bowie shows are going down Thursday at Carnegie Hall and Friday at Radio City Music Hall. The lineups also include: Cat Power, Pixies, Mumford & Sons, Blondie, Anna Calvi, Amanda Palmer, Jherek Bischoff, Nancy Wilson, The Roots, Laurie Anderson, The Mountain Goats, Bette Midler, Perry Farrell, The Polyphonic Spree, Cyndi Lauper, Jakob Dylan, Bettye Lavette, Ann Wilson, and The Donny McCaslin Group (featuring Mark Guiliana, Jason Lindner, and Tony Visconti, who all worked on Bowie’s last album Blackstarr).

Anna Calvi, Amanda Palmer, and Jherek Bischoff are performing as a trio as they recently released an EP of Bowie covers. At Carnegie Hall Debbie Harry is performing solo and at Radio City Music Hall she’s performing with Blondie. The shows are being put on by Michael Dorf and are already sold out. Proceeds will benefit these organizations: Young Audiences New York, Little Kids Rock, Church Street School of Music, the Center for Arts Education, the American Symphony Orchestra, and Grammy in the Schools. More info on the event can be found at www.musicof.org.
