For all its futuristic, neon moodiness the music video for the new Muse track “Madness,” (featured on the band’s upcoming record The 2nd Law) is more or less a high-production retelling of the 2011 Vancouver riot. In case you don’t remember, game seven of the Stanley Cup didn’t end so well for the city fans, leading to a great deal of gas canisters and police shields. Amidst all the chaos a sweetly strange image surfaced that caught a young couple making out in the middle of the street as things seemed to escalate. Substitute in a subway station and it’s pretty much the same thing. Click below to watch. The 2nd Law is out Oct. 2 via Helium 3/Warner Bros. Records.

For the record, the guy was trying to see if his gf who suddenly fell down was alright (as they both stated in subsequent interviews).

Interestingly, Richard Lam who took the photo didn’t even realize it until his editor was going over his shots later that night. He only saw it as a police officer out of focus.

I thought the video was just a response to the criticism over the “Survival” video but this explanation is much more elegant.
