Ryan Adams recently released a new album, Prisoner, via Pax-Am/Blue Note. He stopped by BBC Radio 6 Music to cover Bruce Springsteen’s 1994 hit “Streets of Philadelphia” as the station is celebrating the year 1994 this Friday. The song was written for Jonathan Demme’s 1993 film Philadelphia, which starred Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington and was one of the first mainstream Hollywood films to tackle the HIV/AIDS crisis, gay rights, and homophobia. It won Hanks an Academy Award for Best Actor and “Streets of Philadelphia” won the Oscar for Best Original Song. It was released as a single in the U.K. in 1994, hence its inclusion in the BBC’s 1994 celebration. Adams’ cover is acoustic and can be watched below, followed by his upcoming tour dates.
