Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have already proven to have fantastic chemistry in both 2011’s Crazy, Stupid, Love and 2013’s Gangster Squad (even though the latter was a forgettable bomb). Writer/director Damien Chazelle’s last film, Whiplash, was arguably the best film of 2014 and surely the best film ever about drumming (sorry Drumline). Now the three have come together for a new modern musical (yes, the characters sing and dance and all that). It’s entitled La La Land and it premieres at the Venice Film Festival on August 31 before opening in the U.S. on December 2 via Lionsgate/Summit. The film’s first trailer has premiered today and it features Gosling singing a song entitled “City of Stars” over top of various images from the film, which looks like a loving throwback to the golden age of movie musicals. In La La Land Stone plays Mia, an aspiring actress, and Gosling plays Sebastian, a jazz musician. And of course they fall in love…and sing and dance and all that. The film also stars J.K. Simmons (who deservedly won an Oscar for Whiplash), Finn Wittrock, Callie Hernandez, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Meagen Fay.
