St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) released a new album, MassEducation, last week via Loma Vista. It is a stripped down version of her last album, 2017’s MASSEDUCTION. The album was recorded in two days and just features Clark on vocals and Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman) on piano. Last night she stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live!, who is doing a week of shows in Brooklyn, and fittingly played the MassEducation version of “New York,” backed only by Bartlett on piano. At first they performed behind a curtain, their backs to the audience, then partway through the song the curtain opened to reveal the audience behind them and then Clark turned to face the audience. MassEducation‘s title is amusing, as many mistakenly thought that was the title of MASSEDUCTION. Previously St. Vincent shared the MassEducation version of “Savior,” as well as a live video for the track directed by comedian/actor/director Bobcat Goldthwait.

In the handwritten note Clark described the recording of the album as “two dear friends playing songs together with the kind of secret understanding one can only get through endless nights in New York City.”

Clark also wrote: “We neither rehearsed nor spoke about how to approach any song, but rather, played two to three live takes, picked the best one, and trusted in the feeling of the moment.”

MASSEDUCTION was released in October 2017 via Loma Vista. It was one of our Top 100 Albums of 2017. Back in June she shared “Fast Slow Disco,” a new, more dance floor ready version of the album’s delicate string backed track “Slow Disco.” Then last week she shared a third version of “Slow Disco” that took it in the other direction, to a more stripped down, piano-backed sound. It was fittingly titled “Slow Slow Disco” and that appears to be the version from MassEducation, although in the official tracklist its just titled “Slow Disco.”

“Fast Slow Disco” was one of our Songs of the Week, she performed it on Later… with Jools Holland, and also shared a video for the track.
