Last night, alongside the likes of Kiss, Peter Gabriel, Cat Sevens, Linda Ronstadt, Hall & Oates, and the E Street Band, Nirvana were honored with an induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. With the ceremony taking place at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, and Krist Novoselic were formally welcomed into the Hall by R.E.M.‘s Michael Stipe, who said, ““Nirvana were artists in every sense of the word. Nirvana tapped into a voice that was yearning to be heard. Nirvana were kicking against the mainstream. They spoke truth and a lot of people listened.”
Celebrating their entry, Grohl and Novoselic performed a four-song set of Nirvana classics with guest vocals by St. Vincent (”Lithium”), Joan Jett (”Smells Like Teen Spirit”), Lorde (”All Apologies”), and Kim Gordon (”Aneurysm”).
Keeping things going after the event’s official festivities, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and live guitarist Pat Smear made their way to a 230-capacity Brooklyn club called Saint Vitus for a surprise, invite-only show.
Taking the stage around 2:30am, the group went on to play a 16-song of Nirvana material, once again joined by St. Vincent, Joan Jett, and Kim Gordon, bringing in Dinosaur Jr.‘s J Mascis and Deer Tick’s John McCauley for some additional help.
