Nov 10, 2016 Luc Besson
Back in 1997 French filmmaker Luc Besson co-wrote and directed the ambitious and bonkers science fiction adventure The Fifth Element, which has become a polarizing cult classic over the years. Prior to The Fifth Element Besson was the well-regarded director of Subway, Nikita, and Leon: The Professional, and he’s written, produced, and/or directed a bunch of films since then, including doing all three jobs on 2014’s worldwide hit Lucy. Now 20 years after The Fifth Element he’s returning with another movie that seems to have a similar look and tone, the epic looking sci-fi film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
It’s based on the French comic book Valérian and Laureline (which ran from 1967 to 2010) and the first trailer has just been released. The film stars Cara Delevinge (Suicide Squad) as Laureline and Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) as Valerian and costars Rihanna, Clive Owen, John Goodman, Herbie Hancock, Rutger Hauer, and Ethan Hawke. Visually the space opera looks amazing and entertainment-wise it seems like it could be a blast. We’ll find out when the film is released on July 21, 2017. For now, watch the trailer below.
