In 2009 Wes Anderson directed the delightful stop-motion animated film Fantastic Mr. Fox, an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s children’s novel that starred the voices of George Clooney and Meryl Streep. Since then he’s made two acclaimed live action films, 2012’s Moonrise Kingdom and 2014’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, but now he has returned to stop-motion animation for his new film, Isle of Dogs, which is due out March 23, 2018 via Fox Searchlight. Now the first trailer for the film has been shared. Watch it below.
The film takes place in Japan in the future. Due to a disease outbreak, all of the dogs are sent to live on an island of trash. But one boy travels to the island to search for his dog Rex (voiced by Edward Norton). It seems that the dogs all speak English, whereas the humans speak Japanese. The all-star voice cast also features Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Scarlett Johannson, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Liev Schreiber, Greta Gerwig, F. Murray Abraham, Yoko Ono, Harvey Keitel, Courtney B. Vance, Fisher Stevens, and more.
