If you grew up in America in the 1970s, 1980s, or 1990s there’s a good chance you grew up with Fred Rogers and his beloved PBS children’s show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, which ran from 1968 to 2001. Rogers helped raise generations of kids with his kind and welcoming demeanor and his life lessons about tolerance and more. Now, over 16 years after his death in 2003, he is getting the biopic treatment, with Tom Hanks, also a national treasure, portraying him in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. The first trailer has been shared and can be watched below.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is based on Can You Say…Hero?, an Esquire article by journalist Tom Junod, who was assigned to profile Rogers for the article in 1998 (five years before Rogers’ death), an assignment that altered Junod’s outlook on life. In the movie Junod has been renamed Lloyd Vogel for some reason and is played by Matthew Rhys of The Americans. Marielle Heller, who directed last year’s acclaimed Can You Ever Forgive Me?, directs a script by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood follows the well-liked 2018 documentary on Rogers, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, and is due out on November 22 via Sony.
